Fifty Peso Shots: January 2011

Some shots from the cheap seats:

  • Watching the Timothy Bradley-Devon Alexander fight (which Bradley won by decision after a clash of heads), I couldn't believe the people indignant that Pacquiao didn't choose Bradley to fight.  Bradley's slow, stalking style and punches that are wound up too far are too easy for Pacman.  Bradley holds a lot too and is small.  I don't think it's a good idea for Pacman to face him.
  • Kudos to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) for allowing Smart Gilas to play in the 2nd Conference.  Now, let's see if they can ask the pro refs to call in down the middle and not favor PBA teams.  Congrats to Gilas too for finishing 1st Runner Up in the Dubai International. It's the highest placing by any Pinoy team in its history.  If only they had the Azkals PR to remind people of that.

  • Speaking of the Azkals, it's great they're getting advanced coverage for their game against Mongolia and that MVP is giving them PhP 80 million in funding. My question is, "Why isn't anyone asking why more than a third of the team, including star goalie Neil Etheridge, is still not in training camp in Bacolod now, when the game is days away?"
  • Coach Avery Johnson basically sent Troy Murphy home, saying he and the New Jersey Nets couldn't use him.  Looking at the Nets' struggles with rebounding and with only one center in Brook Lopez, one has to wonder what is up with Johnson and how he is still coaching in the NBA.
  • Melvin Guillard, after a big victory of Evan Dunham, is looking for only, "champions or no. 1 contenders," already scoffing at a possible fight with Kenny Florian.  Maybe Guillard has forgotten that before the Dunham fight, he was just among the many "great potential/waste of talent" guys in the UFC. I want to see him beat Florian easily like he says.
