Open Letter to Commissioner Chito Salud

Mr. Chito Salud
Commissioner, Philippine Basketball Association
186 E. Rodriguez Jr. Ave., Libis, Quezon City

Dear Sir:

First of all, allow me to tell you that I am an avid PBA fan for over 20 years now.  Ever since Great Taste traded away Manny Victorino, Jimmy Manansala and cash for a rookie named Allan Caidic, I was hooked.  By extension, I moved on to the Ginebra train when Caidic became Assistant Coach to Rino Salazar.  In fact, a big part of the reason my blog, From the Fifty Peso Seats, was put up is because of this love for Asia's first pro basketball league.  This is why recent developments have caused me great concern.  I see you every time I watch the PBA live (which is often) and I know you are a hands-on commissioner.

The current semi-final series between Smart Gilas and the Baranggay Ginebra Kings has not been the dream series I anticipated it to be.  I'm not even talking about the perceived partial officiating wherein Nate Brumfield gets 27 free throw attempts, equal to the entire Smart Gilas total for the game.  You see, it doesn't matter to me whichever team wins because I love them both.  What matters is the quality and the morality of the game.

Everyone talks of how Ginebra is proving too tough for Gilas,  but there is a difference between playing tough and physical and playing dirty and unfortunately, it seems Ginebra has lost track of the line. They are intentionally hurting Gilas in the guise of playing tough. In the video below, Mark Caguioa executes a pre-meditated elbow to the back of Lassiter's head (23 sec mark).  The sad part is, this was the second elbow to the back of the head on a Gilas player in Game 1 (1st one was Yancy de Ocampo's on Douthit, 3rd video 35 sec mark).  There are other incidents too. De Ocampo chops at Douthit's fractured hand (video below). Aside from Caguioa's intentional trip on JV Casio in game 1's 4th quarter (3rd video, 2:13 mark), what scared me the most was Billy Mamaril's intentional squeezing and wrenching of Marcus Douthit's fractured hand, also in the 2nd half.  Unfortunately, I can find no videos of this incident posted yet.  Hopefully you can take a look at them too.

It absolutely baffles me that fans find humor in this and declare Gilas unready for international play since they are "soft."  These do not serve to make Gilas any tougher.  Wrenching of a fractured hand, tripping and elbows to the back of the head can not only hurt a person, but seriously maim them.  What it can't do is make the Gilas players ready for the FIBA Asia.  Malicious fouls like those have no place in even the smallest of baranggay leagues, let alone the nation's most prestigious league and the biggest question is, "Why do them on this team?"  Why do them on a team of young men who never once publicly showed any form of arrogance or dirty play?  Why do them on a team of young men who answered the nation's call to represent us in the FIBA Asia when no one else as capable would?

I realize as I write this that you have already punished Caguioa with a fine for a flagrant foul penalty 2 and another fine for tripping, but perhaps a stronger message could be sent by a game suspension. Win or lose Wednesday, Caguioa and the league is better served to miss a game after that, as a strong reminder that PBA players are the youth's greatest role models for basketball, that being a PBA All Star and champion is not just about scoring records and trophies but also the responsibility to be role models with outstanding attitude and sportsmanship.

A part of me just wants Ginebra to end the series soon because I fear for Gilas' safety. How messed up is that?  Never even once in the two decades I watched the PBA have I ever wanted a series to end and that is why I am writing to you sir.  The PBA has always been a great league, something I love, something I defend and something I support.  Some of my fondest memories in college was watching Ginebra with my blockmates, constantly starting the chants of, "Hee-ne-bra!"  For now, though, I'm keeping my authentic Caguioa jersey folded and hidden in my closet.  I pray that you help me regain the pride to unfurl it and wear it again.

Meron ngang konti sorry pero what the heck? Ano ba gusto mo?

Don't hide on being a so-called BGK Diehard...please your not...BGK is in or blood so don't insult us by pretending of being one...

Why do them on a team of young men who never once publicly showed ANY form of arrogance or DIRTY play?
- Oh C'mon, you're funny! Wow, nakafocused ka lang sa Ginebra players. How about Lassiter elbowing rookie John Wilson in Game 2? Lassiter again, holding Tubid's head in Game 2 again? Douthit also caught elbowing Yancy in Game 1. There's a lot more incidents like that na hindi na dapat gawing big deal, because it's BASKETBALL!

Kalaban sya eh!

Why do them on a team of young men who answered the nation's call to represent us in the FIBA Asia when no one else as capable would?
- Well, it's PBA and not FIBA. MAS experience at tough.

BGK plays the Philippine brand of basketball, puro angas, yabang, sakitan at reklamo; the brand of basketball that is irrelevant sa International Competition.

They were hoping to get the support ng mga pinoy but instead puro batikos at kaaway yata ang nakuha. Kawawang National Team.

we can't blame the geinebra fans ..they r the most dirtiest fan,,the likes of Rudy Distrito and Jawaskis are the most dirtiest player in the Phil , there will be a day of reckoning, they don't care about the players carrer all they care are the fans all they care about is wining which isn't everything but the only thing for them !..who cares about Distrito ? for me he can go to hell!!and Jawaski..the most idolized player ..my God what were they thinking???do they now advocate dirty players? I felt that the some of the Gilas players wants to end the series end ..look at Baracael , lassiter and Ramos ..they don't wannna take the open shots..whATEVER ..the commisoners cup isn't that important. Caaguiao Ranidel Ocampo Yancy Ocampo are dirty players ,...the PBA will be better without them . Hurting players are second nature for them ..its premeditated http://redsports.sg/2009/10/01/slingers-ginebra-caguioa-jeffers-basketball/

Basta kami will cheer Ginebra and after that OUR NATIONAL SMART TEAM GILAS.

PEACE!!

I have respect for both teams. Ginebra is a legendary team and Smart Gilas is our national team.

But still iba na ang pagiging physical ng laro if it isn't being done intentionally to injure someone talaga.

From what others are saying alam kong iba ang mundo ng PBA sa FIBA...but basketball is the common denominator di ba?

I understand your point Mr. Tee. iisa lang naman ang point...don't play dirty. Yun lang. Play physical...but not intentional to HURT someone talaga.

I pray that both teams won't get injuries tomorrow. There can be bups, pushes, falls etc etc. wag lang po injury. Wag lang po talaga.

even me,ginebra fan dn, but when i watched d game live vs gilas natakot dn ako kc parang may mali, being physical is accepted but playing a dirty game is being unprofessional... i also observed na dmi bad calls ng referees over gilas, i know both teams were aware kung anu man ang ngyari...pero d nla hawak ang decision ng mga referees...sna lng s susunod n game, wla ng massaktan ng sobra, wlang magtatake advantage s injury ng iba...be fair guys, cno ba maccra? d masaya manalo kung kung alm mong nanlamang ka ng kapwa mo... just do ur best...good luck for both teams...

Thank you for this letter.I'm a Gilas fan.We should all be,because they'll represent our country.Unfortunatelly your letter wan't help, because they don't want to allow the finals between TNT and Gilas. The gym wouldn't be full???!!!About this comments concerning elbows from Gilas players,I have to say that simply, are not the truth!!!!! No Gilas player is using elbow. There was never elbow from Lassiter. If so,he would be fined, don't worry!!!!Also,on the game 2,it was mentioned that Lassiter was holding Tubid for head.Refs watched the replay on the game!!!! Lassiter was trying to make a block, and while landing he fell on Tubid, who grabed him for jersey and pushed down on the floor. It was just unexpected situation.Luckily there were no cosiquences for both players. Douthit is fined, but not for the elbow!!!! It was landing spot violation. There was also landing spot violation from Tubid on Chris Tiu,but he is not fined.During this conference,Gilas players suffered from injuries with broken bones or teared ligaments, cuts on the face(from elbows)all from savage fouls, that were never even called. Not only the refs have their mission(????),but players and coaches showed a lot of hate???!!!We should be concerned. This is not the nicest picture of us as a people, and we did this,to our people???!!!!

someone said.. if nba players were set to play in the pba, they will never survive? why? the physical play... it has always been a part of philippines basketball.. better known as "gulang" or dupong... yes it is a major part of our basketball culture... masyado pa ngang maluwag dito.. sa intl rules, pag technical 2ft at ball possession kya takot ang sino man na gumawa ng kalokohan but here ibahin nyo...

if i know, the Gilas team is more than aware na halos lahat ng team sa pba e may bruiser player may bruiser team pa nga.. that means na sumabak talaga sila sa gyera and i believe na handa talaga sila...

infairness to the BGK... they escaped the 2nd game with a lot of physicality.. and i know The Gilas boys are aware na kasama na rin ang konting magic ng officiating...

infairness din, BGK also displayed "OA" na defense with what i call "STROKE OF LUCK" kaya they got the "W"...

this is ball game.. not a game of personal affairs... you shoot the ball thats it, you missed it then sorry...

but what is important is the essence of the game.. Gilas didnt join this league just to fight for that prestigious PBA championship but rather just a mere preparation,.. bonus na lang if they bag the crown... and WE GREATLY KNEW that this was not part of the original plan.. personally, i've been a long time supporter and believer of this team.. i know the hardships and sacriices they had just to bring us back to the golden days of the sport which we did excelled on for quite sometime... i know some of them personally, some of them may look full of swagger to other people but I tell and assure you that they are good people so dont ever MOCK them or utter undesirable words... same goes for All... sayang eh.. BGK plays with a lot of passion.. proven na yan but passion is way way different from Altercations... why not cheer for our teams with pride and not with arrogance.... corny but this is way way better than what you guys are doing... sa ibang forums nga malala pa...

bottom line... lets all be happy! cheer lang ng maayos! mananalo ang deserving na manalo!!! ok guys!!??? peace out!!!!

i don't think ginebra plays dirty, they're just one hell of a tough team....they play their hearts out each time they are on the hard court...that's what smart gilas should learn....jaworski is the toughest player ever to play basketball in the pba...if your a jaworski hater then you would definetely say that he is a dirty player but i don't think he is...as what ive said he is just the toughest player ever to play in the pba.....

Let's call it what it is.

Very good talaga!

Good points! but do we need to keep our mouth polluted? nah!... pwede naman tayong mag "INTELLIGENT TALK" without any verbal altercations... just an opinionated exchange of ideas..

grabe, ULUPONG, buwaya? ano pa? this is not what we should be... kahit anong klase pang upbringing sayo ng pamilya or ng paligid nyo di naman appropriate to.. pano na lang kung may pumatol sa inyo... masasabi bang nasa katwiran kang sabihan na ULUPONG ang isang tao?

Or nun youtube video at least? Come on PBA! It's not all about gate receipts...

just a tought... feeling ko yung ibang nagcocomment dito, di gilas fan parang sa ibang team e kase laking galit sa ginebra.

--pero may ibang comments dito caught my attention!

GO AZKALS na nga lng hahaha.. Peace na! Holy Week, igalang natin. ;)

Great post Mr. Tee! That missed elbow could possibly paralyze the Gilas player had it connected. That's already another level of gulang that can no longer be tolerated or cheered on.

Caveat: I love Ginebra, and Gilas is my number 2. I agree with fining hard fouls, but I disagree with the "let's protect our national team" sentiment. They joined the PBA, they should toughen up.

In any case, this was well-written and I respect your opinion.

I'm not going to hide my disappointment sa ugali ng mga pinoy. Pinoy nga ako but I wouldn't turn a blind eye sa mga ugaling hindi maganda ng kapwa ko pinoy dahil kadugo ko sila.

Brad, ikaw ang talo dahil you can't stand up for what is right dahil lang sa Pinoy din sila. One side is defending unsportsmanlike attitude and actions and hiding it as "Pinoy" brand of basketball while the other side is saying na we should represent our country better by being a true sportsman in every sense of the word.

Brad saan kang side?

Yes we are a 3rd world country. The whole world knows it but we can also show them that we are civilized and that we don't take pleasure in seeing people intentionally hurting other people. The game was internationally televised for the whole world to see.
