Breaking Blinders

I'm an avowed fan of Gilas. I can't deny it and I won't, but I stopped defending them since this article last year because I figured people have realized how good they are already, especially since they've dominated the PBA teams they have faced.  Lately, though, the hatred for Gilas has been increasing and it's absolutely absurd. I list down the most common attacks on Gilas and let's see if they have merit.

"Marcus Douthit has no tall opposition so he's dominating."

Pros losing to an amateur Gilas team need a convenient excuse.  They've been saying this even before the start of the conference, but PBA teams are better served practicing ball denial and boxing out rather than complaining.  Yes, Douthit has dominating numbers, but it's not all his height; it's the system. A lot of Douthit's points are close in shots, put backs off offensive rebounds and short stabs off cuts.  Neither kind is exclusive to overly huge players.  His rebounds are the same. It doesn't hurt to be huge with long arms, but it also helps that all your teammates, even guards, box out all of the opposition to help things along.  Blocks? It's the same story. Gilas plays a specific kind of defense. Guards lead all opponents to the baseline, where Douthit or any other center will be waiting for the block. At the baseline, offensive players are trapped because of the baseline and the backboard, making it easy to block shots or steal the ball.

Don't believe in the explanation? Find a way to get their stats from their last Middle East tournament and you'll see Douthit averaging close to the same numbers even ranged against NBA-sized imports of the Middle East.  Over here, in the B Meg game where Douthit got hurt, even substitute Greg Slaughter tallied 7 (!) blocks.

"Gilas only wins because they have Douthit."

That's easy to say since GIlas' only loss was when Douthit missed most of the 2nd half game against B Meg, but people have to note two things.  One, the game went into overtime, after GIlas established an 8 point lead AFTER Douthit left the game. Two, B Meg had an import in the game, meaning an import-laden pro team needed overtime to beat Gilas.  Now, with the victory over Powerade with Douthit not playing, Gilas has shown that they can win without Douthit.  Take a close look at all of Gilas games and you will note a similarity.  All Gilas opponents shoot worse in the 4th quarter.  The main reason for Gilas' wins against PBA teams is not the behemoth Douthit but because they run PBA teams ragged.  Their constant movement and relentless screens in half court sets combined with quick hits on their fast breaks are proving too much for a lot of PBA players who have become too muscle-bound to keep up.  Just take a look at the Talk and Text game where the Texters barely scored in the 4th quarter or the Powerade Tigers who couldn't sustain their hot shooting starting as early as the 3rd quarter.  Even in the B Meg loss, stars like PJ Simon and Kerby Raymundo suffered from cramps and couldn't finish the game.

"Gilas guards, especially Chris Tiu, cannot defend bigger guards because they're too small."

If people look at individual situations where opponents "blow by" their Gilas defenders, this is a common mistake.  Like I wrote before, Gilas guards are not as concerned if opponents drive by them because they are funneling the slashers to where they want them (baseline where their centers are waiting).  A lot of the PBA star guards may get great points numbers in box scores, but a quick check at the FG% reveals the true nature of Gilas defense.  PJ Simon scored 20 points, but on 29% (6 of 21) shooting.  Same goes with Gary David's 23 points on 5 of 16 shooting from the 2-point range.

"Gilas players like Chris Tiu are too raw; more experienced PBA pros are better."

It's the safe bet to say veterans play better in tight situations because of experience, but take a look at the Gilas games and it's just not true.  Every game, save for the San Miguel destruction, were close and in each of those games, different, supposedly "raw" players made big plays to win the game for Gilas.  Whether it was Chris Tiu's clutch free throws to beat Talk and Text and Alaska or JV Casio's clutch drive against Powerade, Gilas has shown enough gumption to finish games.  Pros don't exactly have great records in the clutch for us.  Who can forget Olsen Racela's or Alvin Patrimonio's crucial free throw misses which cost us medals in the Asian Games?  Fact is, Gilas players are mentally tough because they fall back on a disciplined system.  That provides much more metal stability than years of local pro league experience.

Gilas still has a lot to learn; I'll be the first to admit that. They need to shoot better more consistently and some of the big men have to get tougher, but their play has more merits than demerits at this point.  Whether they can become world beaters and make the Olympics is irrelevant.  GILAS IS THE BEST NATIONAL TEAM WE CAN FORM AT THIS POINT because PBA teams WON'T LET THEIR PROS LEAVE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME. To not support them, to not support the 12 young men who have trained twice a day, 6 days a week for the past 2 years because they are not the country's favorite PBA pros, is simply idiotic.

Gilas players are raw, alright. But guess who has the bigger heart? The ones who has foregone the opportunity of getting paid better just for the sake of playing for the country?

Sulong GILAS!

Amen to this brother. I just find it idiotic that people attack Smart Gilas, especially Chris Tiu because there are taller and more athletic guards in the PBA. They do not know that it's not only athleticism that win games. It's a mix of talent, IQ, system, discipline, and FAMILIARITY with each other. We've already tried putting PBA All Stars and they were not effective because they had a few months to train.

Basta ako. Kung anong team ang nagbibigay ng parangal sa bansa kakampi nyo ko. Buti nga may nag rerepresent for our country. Mentality nung isang nag comment e CRAP ay CRAb pala. Gilas is the best national team. Sabi may mas magaling pa sa kanila siguro pero mas pinili ng Gilas maglaro for our country. Win or lose GO TEAM PILIPiNAS. Lahat ng Philippine sport may support ng government or private sectors or kahit walang support. I salute you people.

y can't they not support this team?.. hahay.. pinoy talaga.. ibang klase

gilas haters should study history why college players were chosen to represent our country, and why the current line up was formed, before commenting negatively against the people who chose to represent our country and forego big money PBA could bring.

@armangedon after reading the entire post, you still dont understand. it means you're an idiot

seriously, why would the PBA fans think of GILAS as a bitter rival? it's not that they're playing there just to win a championship, they're there to train, why can't people understand that? honestly, these people attacking GILAS are making fun of themselves for being such an idiot.

@armangedon - shut the FUCK UP!! u r ignorant..and knows nothing about basketball.

u just simply proved that ur a complete JERK!!

Team Gilas still the team to beat sa PBA right now, to all anti-Gilas manigas na lang kayo sa inggit dahil laging panalo sila simply because of their HEART and HARDWORK. In Chis Tiu's case, di sya MALAKI, pero sin laki naman ng UTAK ng ELEPANTE ang UTAK niya sa paglalaro sa court. In my opinon, Taulava, Williams and Alapag would make a BIG difference kung mapapasok sila sa qualifying sa FIBA. Goodluck GILAS - MABUHAY ang BASKETBOL ng PINOY !

Armangedon is obviously an idiot and insane. A crab that is unedible, poisonous, and worst Filipino crab I have ever known. He has no knowledge at any sports at all. He's like Mayweather who keeps on talking trash but proved nothing against Filipino boxers. Armangedon shall not exist in this world because he is contagious and might destroy some other's mind.

A very intelligent analysis on the way how Gilas is performing now in its PBA game. A basketball purist cannot ignore how systematic and how disciplined the way how Gilas plays. Those critics who are attacking gilas are also entitled of their opinion but I guess that would be better if they can give a more logical reason why and not just criticize just because of the height or the way how they consistently shoot. Basketball is a team game. Just as how GIlas showed, whatever a player lacks in shooting he makes up in defense and hassle plays which helps the team but are not tangible in the score sheet. Let us face it, the PBA professional players have been pampered too much that they thought they are the only players who has the best system. Now see what is happening.

i am a fan of Gilas too and i have watched them since they started, have seen them grow as a team. and everytime i watch them play, i can't help but still be in awe. not to be melodramatic, but you can totally feel that they're putting their hearts out just to make this country proud. the passion they have for the sport and for the country is so real that you can actually taste it with every ball that goes through the hoop , and their pain with every shot they miss.

Gilas in my honet opinion is the best National team ever formed whether they make it to Olympics or not. They played with passion and determination though not as equally skilled as PBA pros but see how disciplined this team thanks to Coach Toroman.Way to go Gilas...

I like your view on this. It's so unfair to put it on Douthit for being so dominant in the PBA. If they have problems with him in the first place, they should have extended the import height limit to 6'10 for this conference. Di ba? I mean, the PBA already knew during the AFC that Smart-Gilas will be joining. So why create the debate now on Gilas being dominant because of Douthit.

PBA players may be stronger and taller than Gilas players and I really believe that they should be donning the national jerseys. But Gilas players are more experienced and more cohesive than them so I'd rather have them playing for the Olympic qualifier. Perhaps they can add Asi Taulava since he has been with them for two tournaments already and is very familiar with Toroman's system.

Your article is great. In my opinion and analysis adding 2 or 3 PBA players in the team for Olympic qualifier in China is more of a liability than an asset to Gilas. It disrupts the team chemistry and the system. Just look at what happened in the last Asian Games where 3 PBA players were added. We had the worst finished in Asian Basketball.

i couldn't agree more with your article...nilampaso ng Gilas almost every team sa PBA!

OMG! don't say that Chris Tiu should be removed from the team,.. if you watch a basketball game with ur eyes open, you will realize how good he is! he pass the ball well, and even make 3point shots(it's really hard to do that). don't determine the ability of a player with the points he made in every play!
